Thanksgiving Tribute

Thanksgiving Tribute

I was raised to say “please” and “thank you” but honestly never fully understood the importance or benefits of a thankful heart until the last decade of my life. Many factors contributed to this growth but one of the biggest was Coach Kay Yow. Watching her give thanks in the midst of the pain and suffering of cancer gave me a completely new perspective.

Gratitude is a choice that exists outside our circumstances. We can choose it when life is rocking or when it’s hard. And when we make the choice, it changes us.

In the good times thankfulness results in humility, reminding us that many blessings we receive have nothing to do with our own efforts. They are gifts. In bad times gratitude helps us see a bigger picture and find a ray of hope.

So, in tribute to Coach Yow, here are a few things I’m thankful for today…

  • Parents who gave me every opportunity and resource to become successful in life. They taught me the values of hard work and honesty, provided all my material needs (and many wants!) and paid for my college education. They are my biggest cheerleaders and I’m thankful to have a wonderful relationship with them.
  • Siblings who not only love, but like one another. Since moving to Pennsylvania, I’m especially thankful that Stella, Suzanne and Stephen share my commitment to caring for my parents as they get older. They are amazing!
  • Good health. Though I’m sometimes jealous of these young, strong, athletic bodies that surround me at Penn State, I’m so thankful that I can breathe, walk and stay active. My body may not be able to do all I want it to, but am grateful that it can do some things!
  • An opportunity to work with Coquese Washington and the Lady Lions. This was the hugest unexpected blessing of 2012! Every day presents opportunities to learn and get better. I am so thankful for the chance to use my gifts to support Coquese and her vision for this team.
  • That Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chip ice cream is gluten free! Pretty thankful that there are so many gluten free options in today’s world…and especially this one!

It’s your turn! What are you giving thanks for today?
